Social Commentary Years: 2016-Present
Suddenly, in 2016, I saw a photo on the news of a bloodied Syrian child sitting on an ambulance seat, dazed and forlorn. I felt that I had to “do” something, but the only thing I could think to do was make a painting that depicted angels coming to comfort this child. This began my resurgence of art activity.
Once I successfully produced the painting, “Omran, Angels Are Here!” and put it on social media, the response was overwhelmingly positive. I made prints for sale of this painting and they have been purchased all over the world.
Shortly after that, I painted “Water Protectors at Standing Rock.” This depicted another current event and protest happening in 2016 and 2017.
I began to feel a call to paint social commentary and use my talents to bring an artistic, though probably, in my case, an illustrative, vision to certain contemporary subjects.
I am also thoroughly back into a commitment to paint new landscapes, still-lifes and genre scenes that have meaning to me and use art techniques that I believe will enhance the image.
